Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
